New to weights - Bought dumbbells

Hey all, I've just bought some dumbbells, I had basically no money so I went for the cheapest and it only has 2.5kg ones. Yeah it's weird but I guess it'll have to do until I have more money, better than nothing, right? So anyway I was wondering how much I should do? I'm fairly small and 17 years old, I read on Google when you get to the 10th rep it should be very difficult, and after the 12th you shouldn't be able to lift and that's roughly where I'm at with 10kgs on. Yesterday when I couldn't lift any more I would go back sometime later and do more of the 5kgs. Is that a bad thing to do? And today I'm fairly sore and weak. Do I go back and do more later or wait until I'm not so sore?
